Blueberry Lemon Smash

Blueberry Lemon Smash

Blueberry Balsamic Lemon Smash

Description

Blueberry Dark Balsamic, fresh blueberries, lemon, and mint come together in a bright, refreshing smash with deep berry flavor and crisp citrus balance. Serve it sparkling as a refreshing mocktail or add vodka or bourbon for an easy summer cocktail.

Recipe Overview

Serves: 1 drink
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

2 tablespoons Blueberry Dark Balsamic
6–8 fresh blueberries, plus more for garnish
½ ounce fresh lemon juice
4–5 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
¼ ounce simple syrup (1½ teaspoons), optional and to taste
3 ounces chilled sparkling water or club soda
Ice
Lemon wheel, for garnish

Mocktail Version

• Add the fresh blueberries, lemon juice, and optional simple syrup to a cocktail shaker. Gently muddle just until the berries release their juices.

• Add the Blueberry Dark Balsamic and mint leaves, then fill the shaker with ice.

• Shake briefly until thoroughly chilled. The mint does not need to be muddled; shaking releases its aroma without aggressively bruising the leaves.

• Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice. For a more rustic smash with bits of blueberry, use a standard cocktail strainer rather than a fine-mesh strainer.

• Slowly top with 3 ounces chilled sparkling water or club soda and give the drink one gentle stir.

• Garnish with fresh blueberries, a lemon wheel, and fresh mint. Serve immediately.

Cocktail Version

• Add 6–8 fresh blueberries, ½ ounce fresh lemon juice, and up to ¼ ounce simple syrup to a cocktail shaker. Gently muddle just until the berries release their juices.

• Add 2 tablespoons Blueberry Dark Balsamic, 4–5 mint leaves, and 1½ ounces vodka or bourbon. Fill the shaker with ice.

• Shake briefly until thoroughly chilled.

• Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice.

• Top with 2 ounces chilled sparkling water or club soda and give the drink one gentle stir.

• Garnish with fresh blueberries, a lemon wheel, and fresh mint. Serve immediately.

Chef’s Tip

Blueberry Dark Balsamic already contributes both fruit flavor and sweetness, so don't automatically add the simple syrup. Start without it, especially when the blueberries are ripe and sweet, then adjust only if the finished drink needs it. Gently muddle the blueberries to release their juice, but add the mint afterward so its fresh aroma isn't overwhelmed by aggressive muddling.

Flavor Variations

Raspberry: Replace the Blueberry Dark Balsamic with Raspberry Dark Balsamic for a bright mixed-berry smash that layers naturally with the fresh blueberries.

Blackberry: Replace the Blueberry Dark Balsamic with Blackberry Dark Balsamic for a deeper, richer berry variation that complements the fresh blueberries.

Pomegranate: Replace the Blueberry Dark Balsamic with Pomegranate Dark Balsamic for a pleasantly tart, deeper-fruit variation. Taste before adding any simple syrup.

Strawberry: Replace the Blueberry Dark Balsamic with Strawberry White Balsamic and replace the fresh blueberries with 2 medium strawberries, hulled and quartered. Gently muddle the strawberries with the lemon juice before continuing with the recipe.

Cranberry Orange: Replace the Blueberry Dark Balsamic with Cranberry Orange White Balsamic for a brighter blueberry-citrus smash. Keep the fresh blueberries, reduce the fresh lemon juice to ¼ ounce initially, and adjust only after tasting.

Lemon: Replace the Blueberry Dark Balsamic with Lemon White Balsamic for a brighter blueberry-lemon smash. Keep the fresh blueberries and omit the fresh lemon juice initially; taste after adding the sparkling water and add a small squeeze of lemon only if needed.

Lavender: Replace the Blueberry Dark Balsamic with Lavender White Balsamic for a floral blueberry variation. Keep the fresh blueberries and reduce the mint to 2–3 small leaves so the lavender remains distinct.

Blueberry Lime: Keep the Blueberry Dark Balsamic and replace the fresh lemon juice with ½ ounce fresh lime juice for a sharper citrus finish.

Blueberry Basil: Keep the Blueberry Dark Balsamic and replace the mint with 2–3 small fresh basil leaves for a more savory herbal variation.

Finished Beverage

Blueberry Balsamic Lemon Smash served sparkling as a mocktail or with vodka or bourbon

Base

Blueberry Dark Balsamic, fresh blueberries, lemon, mint, and ice, with a small amount of simple syrup only if needed

Mixers & Garnish

Chilled sparkling water or club soda, fresh blueberries, lemon wheels, fresh mint, or basil for the herbal variation

Garnish & Flavor Pairing

Blueberry leads the signature smash; Raspberry, Blackberry, and Pomegranate complement fresh blueberries; Strawberry pairs with fresh strawberries; and Cranberry Orange, Lemon, or Lavender create brighter blueberry variations

Recipe Notes

Fresh blueberries vary in sweetness throughout the season, so treat the simple syrup as optional rather than automatic. Make the drink first with no syrup or only a small amount, then taste after the sparkling water has been added. If additional sweetness is needed, stir in a small splash of simple syrup.

Keep the sparkling water thoroughly chilled, add it last, and stir only once or twice so the finished drink stays lively and refreshing. When using brighter White Balsamic variations, adjust the fresh lemon first rather than compensating for excess acidity with additional sugar.

Vodka creates a clean, berry-forward cocktail, while bourbon adds vanilla, caramel, and oak notes that complement blueberry, lemon, and mint.

Cocktail versions are intended for adults age 21+. Please enjoy responsibly.
