Recipe Overview

Serves: 1 drink
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

1 tablespoon Fig Dark Balsamic
½ ounce fresh orange juice
¼ teaspoon vanilla flavoring or extract
3 ounces chilled tonic water
Ice
For the Cocktail: 1½ ounces bourbon or spiced rum
Orange twist, cinnamon stick, or star anise, optional garnish

Mocktail Version

• Use alcohol-free vanilla flavoring if you want the drink to be completely alcohol-free.

• Add Fig Dark Balsamic, fresh orange juice, and ¼ teaspoon vanilla flavoring to a shaker with ice.

• Shake briefly until thoroughly chilled.

• Strain into a rocks or highball glass filled with fresh ice.

• Slowly add 3 ounces chilled tonic water and stir once or twice very gently from the bottom of the glass to combine without flattening the carbonation.

• Express an orange twist over the drink and garnish with the twist. Add a cinnamon stick or star anise if desired.

Cocktail Version

• Add Fig Dark Balsamic, fresh orange juice, ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract, and 1½ ounces bourbon or spiced rum to a shaker filled with ice.

• Shake until thoroughly chilled.

• Strain into a rocks or highball glass filled with fresh ice.

• Slowly add 3 ounces chilled tonic water and stir once or twice very gently from the bottom of the glass.

• Express an orange twist over the surface and garnish with the twist. Add a cinnamon stick or star anise if desired.

Chef’s Tip

Vanilla should stay in the background rather than dominate the drink. A measured ¼ teaspoon is enough to round out the fig and orange while still allowing tonic's crisp bitterness to keep the drink refreshing. An orange twist adds aromatic citrus without adding additional sweetness.

Flavor Variations

• Bordeaux Cherry Vanilla Spice Tonic: Replace Fig Dark Balsamic with Bordeaux Cherry Dark Balsamic for dark cherry flavor that pairs beautifully with vanilla, orange, and bourbon.

• Cranberry Orange Vanilla Spice Tonic: Replace Fig Dark Balsamic with Cranberry Orange White Balsamic for a brighter citrus-fruit version with a festive edge.

Recipe Notes

Tonic waters vary considerably in sweetness and bitterness, so choose one you enjoy on its own and serve it well chilled. Bourbon creates a richer, oak-and-vanilla-forward drink, while spiced rum emphasizes baking spice and gives the tonic a softer, rounder character. Add the tonic only after shaking and straining so you preserve its carbonation. Cocktail versions are intended for adults age 21+. Please enjoy responsibly.
